Interview an individual

 

Be certain to schedule an interview time.

Get your interviewee's signature.

Take an atlas or a map of the country with you to the interview.

Take photos, video tape the interview, or record the interview. Ask permission. Most importantly, be sensitive toward the comfort of the interviewee.

Where did you live?  city? rural area?  Show me on this map. 

 

What is a common family size?

 

Tell me about your house? style? building materials? number of rooms?

 

What was your job? or your dad's? or your mother's?

 

What was your favorite holiday? How did you celebrate?

 

What were your favorite foods?  most common foods?

 

Did you go to school? Tell me about it.

 

What did you do in your free time?

 

Did you have a car? a computer? a cell phone?

 

Did you dress as we do in the U.S. or was there an ethnic style clothing?

 

Is religion important to you? If so, what religion do you practice.

 

What is one of the most interesting things about __________________ that you might share with me?

 

What do you see as the biggest difference in living in the United States and living in ________________?

 

REMEMBER, these are just possible questions. Your goal is to engage your interviewee in conversation so that you may learn about the culture of his/her country. Ask questions which come naturally to your conversation.

Prepare a presentation for the class. Use available technology!
